Also known as the allocation unit size, cluster size represents the smallest amount of disk space that can be allocated to hold a file. Because ReFS and NTFS don’t reference files at a byte granularity, the cluster size is the smallest unit of size that each file system can reference when accessing storage.

If it's on, the original block is 1MB, but it then becomes anything between 1MB (uncompressable block) and any lower value. Say I have after compression a file that is 644k, this consumes 10 * 64k blocks plus a 4k space.

Jun 29, 2017 · When creating ReFS volume, it is important to choose 64K as allocation unit size as picking up the default 4k brought problems with memory usage (apparently resolved with the latest Microsoft March 2017 patches pack, but still apparently breaking another feature….. Hyper-V backup.).

Dec 04, 2019 · To view the specific ReFS info on this drive, we can run the following line. fsutil fsinfo refsinfo E: Take a look at value for the “Bytes Per Cluster”, this is where we can see that when this drive was formatted, it’s allocation unit size was set to 65k. 65k is also the recommended setting for Veeam destinations if you are using ReFS.

The file system on the specified volume does not support fast cloning. We recommend using ReFS volume formatted with 64 KB cluster size. Proceed anyway?

I've looked at the documentation and it says to use 64KB block size for the ReFS volume and to ensure Windows is kept up to date of course.

May 17, 2010 · The ReFS is formatted with 4k cluster size as that is what was recommended to me previously, but I see current recommendation now seems to be 64k which is slightly annoying as the volumes are now setup. We are using Veeam 9.5 and the Veeam server and Repo are the same server which is running Server 2016.
