26.09.2019 · What I did to setup vnc on Debian 10 was simply install x11vnc and disable Wayland. Then, to test it, manually started the vnc server from a command line from within a Gnome session on the server (did not work when I started it remotely via ssh). Then connected with a VNC client from another machine and it worked. Might want to try that.

I got this working by editing the ~/.vnc/xstartup file: I commented out the 2nd and 3rd lines, then the normal desktop appeared. I also changed the Desktop Manger to Gnome in the last line.

I am on ubuntu 16.04 LTS. It is an amazon EC2 instance I got grey screen upon installing and starting the vncserver I try many suggestion regarding this issue but still cant get it work ...
