The LAN DNS setting you describe seems to be what the DHCP server of the router tells the LAN clients to use as DNS server. If the setting is empty the router may use it's own IP address in case the router has a DNS cache/forwarder, or it may tell the clients to use the WAN DNS directly.

The LAN DNS servers are the addresses that DHCP will give out to clients on your LAN instead of itself (which is the default). In most cases you would not want to specify DNS servers for either of those screens.
