Custom checks are easy to write, I just love the notification windows (business hours alerting FTW!) and there's an option to execute auto-mitigation commands rather than alert. But man, Check_MK is more complex than a NoSQL Database! Depending upon your environment, the number of config files for Check_MK can run into the thousands.

Doesn't zabbix use java? That's why I eliminated it from my list. I use check_mk now, migrated from Nagios. Plus, Nagios (and thus check_mk) are easily maintained using Puppet. No idea about zabbix tho. Finally, the Nagios community is huge, more chance of finding an issue already explained, an uncommon check already written, tons of docs, etc.

Zabbix I found really horrible unless you have a uniform environment. Even then the dashboards for it are just terrible compared to Cacti, LibreNMS, or Nagios. The graphing in it also leaves a lot to be desired as last I checked it is incapable of doing totals and a few other common things that are useful for network graphs.

+1 for Check-MK. Version 2.0 is just around the corner which has a tonne of new features and fixes. The beta is currently available for the free edition (up to 10 hosts / 2 sites). To my excitement they've added their own data source which can be used in Grafana. The beta for the raw edition should be released in January iirc.
