The edge router is best to be a flexible security focused OS, eg, OPNSense, or a full OS eg OpenBSD or a Linux distribution running on a thin client mini PC. I am still undecided between OPNSense and a BSD distribution.

Openwrt is concentrating on replacing the stock fw of consumer routers so id say pfsense would be better. pfSense have some pretty fundamental issues when it comes to their developers, alienating outside help.
