Openwrt Vs Pfsense. Which one is better and why? I tried both. Pfsense is easier to use and well integrated. However, i can see openwrt can do what pfsense does, but there are lots of people still prefer pfsense. FreeBSD vs Linux - pfsense seems to be mostly single threaded where as openwrt makes use of as many threads as you have. Home use vs professional - I've used pfsense at work and it's fantastic, but I don't really need all the things it does at home.

pfSense, OPNSense, and OpenWRT are working great with OpenVPN. On APU routers pfSense and OPNsense achieve about 100Mbit/s throughput. OpenWRT achieves about 140Mbit/s. APU delivers more than 600Mbit/s with Wireguard VPN. If you have a choice between OpenVPN and Wigeguard, choose the latter.

pfSense or OpenWrt for Routing, Firewall, SQM, USB 3.0 NAS Samba v4, Adblock, Wireguard, etc. they are both fantastic. Then plug-in a WAP such as the $99 Ubiquiti U6-Lite-US. WAP is needed for best performance because OpenWrt barely supports WiFi 6 and is outdated in general with WiFi features.

On pfSense you can install a wide variety of packages to a add new functionalities. However a blinking port-LED doesn't mean this computer is generating traffic.

As frenchiepush said pfsense is a high grade firewall system and openwrt is suited to wifi ap and basic routing capabilities. I've been using both in harmony for years. But I feel the pfsense is getting left behind the feature set of Opnsense. Pfsense is stable and the pfblockerng is great blocking system, but the layout of the ui is horrendous.

OpenWRT is a "Linux for weak devices". It is made in a zillion different sochowski routers and access points, turning them in on the full Linux.
