Openwrt does everything I need it to and almost nothing I don't. Packages - pfsense is great for stability but it's packages are often running behind. Great for business, not really necessary for home. Openwrt on the other hand has more up to date (but less stable probably) packages, like wireguard. I have nothing bad to say about either.

Only 120 Mbit Speed on a 250Mbit Cable Network. Hello, with some struggles, I've finally managed to install OpenWrt on my TP-Link W8980. In a thrill of anticipation I've started a speedtest, just to find out, that I'm downloading with whopping 50 Mbit/s. Compared to 270 Mbit/s on stock firmware I was very dissapointed.
pfSense should give you a much better connection and be more stable. But at the expense of power. If power is expensive, it may not be worth it. But then again, if you enjoy *NIX, it's definitey worth it. Otherwise, Sophos UTM, or Untangle are better …
