21.06.2019 · In terms of performance on beefier systems you'll probably see lower on OpenWRT unless you compile your own firmware with a few tweaks as x86/x86-64 targets (and packages) are compiled for pretty old CPUs due to compatibility and size. As far as updating and security goes pfSense has a nicer patching/updating path IMHO.

PFSense is designed to be a router/firewall as well as an IDS/IPS. It has limited wireless support and is not recommended for use as an access point. OpenWRT is designed to be a powerful wireless access point/router. It's firewalling and filtering is passable but it's not focused on being a filtering device so it's ability to do so is more limited.

OpenWRT is a Linux kernel and multi-threaded by default. Updates. pfSense is great kit, but for a not insignificant amount of time the latest version of pfSense was running on an EOL OS. Again, FreeBSD 11. Not deprecated. End of life. Features. pfSense does everything you want a router to do in an Enterprise environment.
