The WAN DNS Server is what the USG itself will use to resolve DNS (if on Auto it should default to your ISP's DNS). This would include any clients that are looking to the USG as a DNS server. The simplest way to set up Pihole is to point the WAN DNS to the Pihole, leaving Lan DNS on Auto.

I added a pihole to the vlan and under both LAN and IoT network pointed to the pihole as the dns server. However the traffic on the LAN network does not seem to be going through the pihole. The devices can still access the internet but I don’t see any LAN devices being logged in the pihole.

30.12.2020 · The IP address of my Pi-Hole is 10.0.1.23, you would need to change this accordingly.Also take note that I am using eth0 since I have the USG Pro, if you are using the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway then it would be eth1 instead.. After adding that code to the config.gateway.json file I was able to reprovision my USG Pro and it picked up the new settings.

This ensures that if the Pi-hole goes down then the USG can still resolve DNS. After setting this up clients will use Pi-hole for DNS, as configured via DHCP.
