29.06.2021 · I understand DSM 7.0 will be released officially on 29 June, and once upgrading from DSM 6.2 is accomplished, there will be no going back. Even though the DSM 7.0 "official" version likely will be virtually identical to DSM 7.0 RC with some tweaks, I've seen comments on this forum suggesting that the RC version is not yet ready for prime time.

19.10.2021 · In DSM 6.0 as of Present Day this OS allows you to use smaller drives as hotspare. (Tested and confirmed) If installing DSM 7.0 from scratch you may not use any disks not on the compatibilty list of Synology's server list. If upgrading, or swapping to a new hard disk that is not on the compatibility list then yes you are allowed to use them.
