The soloution in the end was to run the following powershell commands: Get-VMSnapshot -VMName vmwithcheckpoint.domain.com -ComputerName hyper-v.domain.com| fl - this returns the VM state. and to remove the checkpoint:
28.04.2021 · The avhd (x) doesn't get removed, but the server starts to run off of it from then on. This is typical when a host update occurs, the backup is running and somewhere it gets restarted due to the updates and the backups were not completed yet. The only way I can find now is to manually merge your excess avhd. files:

27.09.2018 · Maybe Veeam somehow can't delete the file because it was still in use or something. I corrected my typo above, I mean't the .avhdx of course :-) If you can rename them then they are indeed not in use and you should be safe to clean them up.

It appears most of the disk space is being taken up by .avhdx files approximately 1GB in size, 6 per month, going back almost one year. Hyper-V manager does not show any open snapshots.

Jan 18, 2018 · Also noticed under the Hyper-V Management Console that there are no snapshots in place. My Guess is that the AVHDX must have been orphaned from a previous backup which was attempted.
