Since you are not using Unraid for a file server or for it's super nice docker interface, then ESXi or Proxmox would fit your use case better. Proxmox would be more feature rich and is pretty popular in homelabs. ESXi, XCP-NG / XenServer, and Hyper-V are more "true" hypervisors. They aren't designed to serve data, they host VMs. If you want to serve data, it'll be in a VM. You can pass through disks or controllers and do it that way, but the host OS doesn't support that.

Proxmox VE is open source, while Unraid is not. Unraid does have parts where the source code is available because they are building on GPL ...

The best server OS for your homelab is actually a hypervisor. VMware ESXi or Proxmox VE are two popular options.

16.07.2017 · unRAID is mainly targeted for storage solutions, although it has Docker and KVM also included. The thing with Docker is that the UI by default supports containers from specific sources (templates), but you can install any other container from the CLI. You don't install Gitlab on ESXi, you need a operating system that will be running it.
