Im looking at buying unraid, truenas or sticking with proxmox (esxi isnt on my list as i feel proxmox free is the superior option)

I have all 3 in my home lab and I prefer esxi 6.5 then proxmox second followed by unraid. For many reasons including ui and ease of use. Since you are not using Unraid for a file server or for it's super nice docker interface, then ESXi or Proxmox would fit your use case better. Proxmox is a hypervisor like Vmware esxi only it's free and easy to setup . I thought unraid was basically another nas?

16.07.2017 · unRAID is mainly targeted for storage solutions, although it has Docker and KVM also included. The thing with Docker is that the UI by default supports containers from specific sources (templates), but you can install any other container from the CLI. You don't install Gitlab on ESXi, you need a operating system that will be running it.

Proxmox would be more feature rich and is pretty popular in homelabs. ESXi, XCP-NG / XenServer, and Hyper-V are more "true" hypervisors. They aren't designed to serve data, they host VMs. If you want to serve data, it'll be in a VM. You can pass through disks or controllers and do it that way, but the host OS doesn't support that.
