Just an FYI and I wouldn't recommend it for production but it’s actually possible to use a Synology NAS as a “native Linux repository” within Veeam. Usually, the Synology NAS would just be configured as a CIFS (SMB) target or better yet accessed via iSCSI attached to a managed server.

19.12.2019 · Veeam Backup to Synology NAS takes forever. When I did a full system backup the transfer rate for each disk got "significantly" slower, e.g. disk c was 52 MB/s, disc d was 13 MB/s and disc e was 9 (!) MB/s. As a consequence a full backup would take days.

I'm scoping out a project where we'll be placing a couple of Synology NAS's as backup repositories. I've read about using Minio inside of a container (Docker) running on the NAS and have a theory that we could use that setup to leverage data immutability using local storage for those clients that are cloud adverse.

This setup allows us to seamlessly integrate Synology NAS devices into Veeam as a standard Linux server and repository which means that all the data transform operations take place in the OS itself, directly on the disks. There are other ways to integrate the Synology NAS devices that make more sense in different design scenarios.
