Proxmox VS unRaid : VM CPU Performance. Hello folks, I am all for Proxmox, but I must say that I am tempted by unRaid for the builtin Docker management. I was watching a video of a guy who was demonstrating how to create a VM, and I noticed something right away : you can not use all the CPU cores for the VM.

Unraid does have parts where the source code is available because they are building on GPL software, but the bits that make it different (GUI, etc) are all closed. That is more a philosophical difference than any difference in functionality.

You can do PCI passthrough in Proxmox (which enables the whole gaming pc that doubles as a VM host situation you mention), so that’s not really a feature difference between Proxmox (or KVM in general) and Unraid.

Proxmox at its core is an L2 hypervisor, with its core mission being to provide a vm cloud infrastructure. Given your primary use case is deploying docker containers with only a single virtual machine, that seems like overkill. And you're going to have to put in a lot of customization to get it to match what you're doing with unRAID.
